What is a developer assembly?
The developer unit in a laser printer is responsible for managing and applying toner to the drum, allowing the printer to create visible images.

  

Is a drum the same as a developer unit?
While some drum cartridges have the developer integrated in it already, many copiers and laser printers have a separate developer. The drum is a photo-conductive cylinder. While the developer unit contains all the toner.

 

How many developer assembly does my machine have?
Colour laser printers and copiers have 4 developer units, one for each color. B&W printers, also called monochrome printers, have one developer.

 

How often or when do I need to change a developer unit?
To help confirm that you need to replace the developer, there is a yield associated with it. This yield could be 80,000 prints or 300,000 it all depends on the make and model of the equipment. Often times, light or faded prints are indication that the developer needs a replacement even when it's life cycle has not yet been reached.

 

Can I replace the developer myself?
No, it is not recommended. A trained and certified technician is required to perform replacement or installation of a new developer unit. The installation process may get messy and wrong if not done carefully and properly and could damage the machine. The technician will also need to reset the counter for the developer.
